1986 Andrés Segovia Masterclass - Marcelo Kayath plays Fandango by Joaquin Rodrigo
This was the 4th and last class I had with Segovia in the 1986 USC Masterclass. From our previous classes I knew that he didn't want me to play fast, so I took it a little slower to get the full benefit from his comments and advice without getting into futile arguments about tempi. Problem is, he stopped me a lot less than I expected and the class ended up being a little too short. Anyway, it was an unforgettable experience. I hope you enjoy it.

Is Segovia correct that the the 3rd note of bar #4 should not be sharpened ? I read it differently.

Fandango by Joaquin Rodrigo. One of my most favorite pieces. I thought Marcelo played it beautifully. But if Maestro Segovia tells you to stop, than there is a problem. But Marcelo played amazingly. This guitarist gives him ten thumbs' up! However, I would have loved for Segovia to give me advice, and constructive criticism. What an amazing opportunity.

Segovia is 93 here. Really, he shouldn't be "teaching" in the state he is in at this stage of his life. He is not capable of teaching properly. 5:00 to 5:21 WTH? These students just wanted the esteem of saying "I was taught by Segovia".

"ebony is tilting i have to tell the same...because you immediately begin the in day is not the way to play.. is very well you have very good time. beginning i have to tell you. you have measure well" something like that by an awkward silence by the student and some mediocre playing followed. what's the problem here?

  • @timatwater8247

Very interesting, Segovia seems to have a fixed mental image of every piece he played. I always wondered why he increased the tempo of the Allemande in Ponce's a minor suite so much, did he think that necessary? But actually here he had you slow it down slightly, it's as if a recording of the way he played the piece is stuck in his mind and no other interpretation is allowed, yet this Allemande in particular is played far faster than the usual Allemande. In any case you did a good job of adapting to Segovia's suggestions on the fly. Will check out the Las Folias variations too.

Watching and listening to MK play the Folias de Espana is a wonderful demonstration of his marvelous technique and musicianship. But to me , what the maestro was trying to convey was that this piece by Granados is NOT a guitar piece… it is a vocal. And the guitarist must let his instrument also sing it. As beautiful and expressive as the guitar can be , it cannot match to nuances of the human voice. Towards the end of the video, MK begins to understand that , but still fails to accent via rubato certain notes that Segovia does on his recordings of the piece that make such a work of poetry from the composition . Nevertheless, Mr K is a very gifted guitarist .

I got the impression that he had made his point about tempo and it would come as you mature into your playing. So, I disagree that your lesson was too short, I'd say you missed it and, forgivably so, went on pretty much in a futile argument regardless of whether it was overtly expressed. I must say I enjoyed the more slowed down tempo, I feel it brought more essence to the fore and related more to the guitar, to the piece and to the teacher.
